Burr Intermediate School has earned a unique distinction! For the
past eleven years, we have been named an Honor School by the Suffolk
Reading Council. To show our achievement there are eleven gold
banners on display outside the auditorium.
In order to be recognized as an Honor School, we must document our
efforts to promote literacy. Burr students participate in Suffolk
Reading Council's creative writing contest submitting prose and
poetry entries. An Honor School poster, highlighting the literacy
activities at Burr Intermediate School, is submitted.
Many literacy activities are an integral part of our developmental
reading and language arts program. Students write and receive
letters from pen pals. Many fine examples of their work are on
display on bulletin boards throughout the school. Book fairs are
held in our library to give children the opportunity to purchase
books. Some of our fifth graders are "Peer Readers" and share their
favorite books with the younger children. We have also had
celebrated authors visit with our students to share their craft.
We are very proud that Burr students are actively involved in the
literacy process throughout the year.
