Grade Four


Students in grade four at Burr Intermediate School are happily engaged in true academic pursuits.  Fourth graders are lively at Burr and they flourish in the continued exposure to all academic areas.  Students in grade four take State Assessments in English Language Arts, Math and Science.  Please watch your calendars for those dates.    

Burr is a community of readers.  English Language arts continue to be a strong focus in grade four.  Students are engaged in reading literature and crafting well written responses.   Comprehension activities abound in grade four.   Research projects, long term m assignments and essays keep the focus and attention of the grade four students throughout the year. 

Math lessons in grade four include adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and problem solving. Students work in cooperative groups to study math problems and their solutions as a way to assist them becomes life long learners in a global world.

At Burr Intermediate School grade four students continue to study in science labs. In the lab students study Botany and how a seed becomes a plant.  In addition magnets and circuits are also great hands on activities for students.  Students I grade four have a year of science fair under their belts and will begin a new topic for their experiments.

In social studies most grade four students take part in an awesome field trip to Fire Island.  This field trip is an extension of the grade four curriculum study of Long Island.  Students are learning map skills, history and so much more about Long Island and New York State.
