The grade five year began at Burr Intermediate School with an opportunity for the grade level to gather as a whole and have their photograph taken in the courtyard at Burr to commemorate their last year at Burr. The yearbook will be worked on all year and photographs will continue to be taken. Students in grade five take State Assessments in English Language Arts and Math. Please watch your calendars for those dates.
The grade five curriculums for English Language arts include realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy and poetry. Students are engaged in reading literature and writing continues to grow with long term assignments.
Math lessons in grade five include adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and problem solving with large numbers.
At Burr Intermediate School grade five students learn about geography and they study maps and atlases. They also participate in STAR LAB, a giant igloo shaped dome house that mirrors a small planetarium.
A culminating activity for grade five students is a trip to Camp Mariah in Fishkill, New York. Students enjoy extending their learning in science by investigating animal adaptations, aquatic and forest ecology and geology. They take hikes, fish and learn overall wilderness survival. The nights are spent viewing presentations and writing in journals.
