~Deng Xiaoping The staggering 4,000-year history of China has only recently been influenced by Western ideals. Prior to the reign of Deng Xiaoping, otherwise known as the Deng era, Mao Ze Dong dictated with an iron fist ˇ°one of the most wasteful economic systems in the worldˇ± (OECD). The Deng era aimed to correct the past and initiate the economic expansion of China to an international degree. Thesis: Although economic reforms proposed by Deng Xiaoping triumphed in the amplification of Chinese economic growth and improvement in living conditions, they also created lasting environmental issues and widened the persistent socioeconomic rift between urban and rural regions.
