GIBS, IBNA and UNIS Sponsor Northeast Regional College/University Recognition Conference      June 14, 1999 at UNIS

GIBS, in conjunction with IBNA and UNIS presented "The International Baccalaureate: A One Day Seminar for Universities" at the United Nations International School on June 14, 1999. Over twenty area colleges were represented. It is part of our stepped up effort to help colleges learn more about the details of the IB Program. We hope, that in conjunction with the recent change in IB terminology of SL Exams as "subsidiary" to Standard Level, and the development of the IBO World Wide Web Site devoted to College Recognition, colleges and universities will revise their credit/placement policies regarding the IB. A more important aim is to aid college in the details of the Diploma Program so they can more accurately evaluate applicants presenting credentials from IB Diploma Schools.

The Conference Agenda included sessions about the IB Curriculum and Assessment, Models of Advanced Standing currently used by colleges, and the IB in the Admissions Process. The latter two session were presented by James Minter, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Columbia College, Deb Shaver, Associate Dean of Admissions at Smith College, and Shelley Krause, Director of Admissions at the College of New Jersey. In addition to these sessions, a panel of IB students presented the student’s perspective on the program. A poster session, in which current IB students displayed all of their Internal Assessment Work, copies of the exam papers they sat for, their Extended Essays and their CAS activities allowed the college participants an intimate look at quality and quantitiy of work produced by IB Diploma Candidates.

The colleges represented at the seminar were: Babson College, Columbia College, CW Post/Long Island University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Fordham University, Hofstra University, Johnson & Wales University, Marist College, Marymount Manhattan College, Middelbury College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Sarah Lawrence College, Smith College, St. John’s University, SUNY Purchase, The College of New Jersey, Union College, and Wesleyan University.

Many thanks to our presenters and panelists, our gracious hosts at UNIS and to the IBNA for their financial support.
