Welcome to Commack Middle School, a United States Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, where teachers, students, and parents pursue the vision to provide a child-centered environment with a wide range of learning experiences that enables children to achieve academic and personal growth, helps them meet educational objectives, and supports them in their development as independent, life-long learners and responsible citizens.
 

At the Middle School students in grades 6, 7, and 8:

are scheduled into family-like interdisciplinary teams where they receive individual attention, caring and support, and also interdisciplinary instruction so they can "make the connections" in learning.  Each team is assigned to one of three “houses,” both to reduce the distance students have to travel between their academic classes and to enhance the students’ sense of belonging and of “family.”

are recognized for their diverse learning needs and given equal opportunities for achievement.  Our school has full inclusion for those who learn differently as well as special gifted and honors programs for those who learn with facility.  We recognize a wide range of individual differences and support multiple teaching methods to meet every student’s needs.

enjoy dynamic classroom activities and experiential learning opportunities which engage students in active exploration, interaction, and discovery.

enjoy a celebration of their achievements through continuous displays of student work and awards in classrooms, hallways, and public areas, through public announcements, and in school newsletters and notes of commendation.

Commack Middle School offers:

a challenging program of academic courses which supports every child’s achievement.  All our courses are designed to meet the NYS Learning Standards which emphasize high expectations, authentic instruction, and performance assessments.  Each course is supported by a written curriculum that is reflective of the community’s high expectations for student achievement, of state aims, and of national goals.

a full range of exploratory courses (art, family and consumer sciences, health, and technology) and authentic learning experiences in every discipline which link what students learn in school to real-life issues and which sustain their learning beyond the classroom.

honors and accelerated courses in English language arts, social studies, math, and science in grades 6, 7, and 8, and accelerated courses in foreign languages in grades 7 and 8, to meaningfully challenge our brightest students.

a comprehensive assessment program, aligned with NYS mandates, which allows us to closely monitor the effectiveness of our curriculum and teaching practices as well as the individual students’ progress in learning.

a range of courses and support services designed to help underachieving students and those at-risk for failure so that they may attain necessary skills to perform at the highest levels possible.

cooperative-learning and critical-thinking strategies in the classroom and other situations as a means of promoting students’ social and intellectual development.

a range of technological tools, including five fully equipped computer labs, class sets of “computers on wheels,” SmartBoards, and automated library systems, to aid students in their studies, to enable them to access and process information more efficiently, and to improve the quality of their work products.

a varied character education program that includes peer mediation; a wide range of counseling/discussion groups; small- and large-group assembly programs on bullying, sexual harassment, and drug abuse; formal policies prohibiting teasing of any kind and prohibiting weapons or drugs of any kind on school property at any time; and a zero-tolerance policy for any act that threatens or endangers the welfare and safety of anyone at school.

a sustained commitment to middle-level students.  We ensure their safety and well being at all times.  We seek to develop effective, age-appropriate teaching strategies that stress exploration and discovery.  We welcome the opportunity to serve as student advisors and advocates as our students seek independence, a positive self-image, peer acceptance, and pride in their identity.  We maintain high expectations for every child.
