First Sample that Tested Positive for West
Nile Virus This Season
The New York State
Department of Health has notified Suffolk
County that a mosquito sample has tested
positive for West Nile virus. The sample was
collected from a mosquito pool found in
Greenlawn by the Suffolk County Department
of Health Services on July 1st. This is the
first sample in Suffolk County to test
positive for West Nile virus this year.
“The confirmation of West Nile virus in a
mosquito pool today in Suffolk County is an
indication that the virus is actively
circulating, as we expected,” said Dr.
Humayun J. Chaudhry, Commissioner of the
Suffolk County Department of Health
Services. “There is no cause for alarm or
panic but we do ask that all Suffolk County
residents, not just those in Greenlawn, take
precautions.”
