Spring 2004: District Update
Middle School & High School
Burr, Wood Park & Sawmill

As we approach the fulfillment of the bond issue that was passed in 2001, all additions to the school buildings are either open now, or will be open for use in September 2005.
The Bond Issue Construction Project in the Commack School District is proceeding well ahead of schedule. This summer will be an extremely busy one, as both the middle and high schools undergo renovations, and the new extensions at both schools are completed in time for school’s opening day in September 2005.
“The most difficult phase of the project is renovation,” said Kevin Carpenter, in charge of the entire operation as Administrator of Facilities and Operations. “We will be remodeling the main office at the middle school, as well as the library, science classrooms, and cafeteria. People are working during the summer, so alternate areas must be established to conduct the day-to-day school operations.” The sports fields are also nearing completion, with the front field that borders on Vanderbilt Parkway to be ready for play by September. Next spring, the new softball field in the rear of the school will be finished, as well as the renovated baseball field (with 90-foot bases) in the front of the school. The new forty-classroom extension is fully enclosed, there’s a first coat of paint on the interior classrooms, with most flooring complete. The brick match between the existing and new buildings (the gymnasium is already in use) is so close, it’s a challenge to tell where the new construction took place.
At the high school, the new 42-classroom wing’s exterior is also complete, and interior work is continuing at a quick pace. Walls are up, flooring is going down, and furniture will be delivered in July. The foundation for the cafeteria extension has been poured. The cafeteria will feature a food court, and a retro look design theme. The four new stairwells are slated for completion by September, and renovations on the library and science rooms will begin once school is out for summer vacation. Commack will not be hosting the high school summer school this year due to the extensive work being done. The new music wing is already in use; the soccer field will be seeded in the fall; the parking lot by the new wing will be ready for September. The guidance area is being expanded, and counselors will be moved to the portables until the renovations are completed.
Wood Park Primary School's west and east wings are already in use, and new windows are being installed in the “old” building. Sawmill and Burr Intermediate Schools’ expansion and renovations are complete.      Kevin Carpenter is more than pleased with the advancement of the project. “I have been delighted and pleasantly surprised with all of the cooperation demonstrated by students, staff, and the general public. The collaboration of all has been a key element in bringing this massive building project to completion within budget, and ahead of schedule.”
