COMMACK UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT
HUBBS ADMINISTRATION CENTER
September 1, 2007 Dear Resident: In order to provide parents, guardians and residents with information concerning convicted sex offenders who are living in this district, the Commack School District is now benefiting from a new no-cost sex offender alert notification program. Parents for Megan’s Law will email district residents who have registered to request such information to inform them of any new sex offender’s presence and to direct them to their website where they may access a full copy of the notification. This new policy will give subscribers information of any sex offender notification issued within Suffolk and Nassau County, not just offenders residing in this school district. The implementation of this policy prevents educational resources from being used on costly mailings while at the same time giving residents the opportunity to be informed of all offenders in Suffolk and Nassau County at no cost to the resident. The District will no longer be sending mailings when notifications are received, but will continue to maintain these files for duplication or viewing upon request at the Hubbs Administrative Building located on Clay Pitts Road, East Northport, NY. Click here for an email alert registration form that must be completed by you to participate in the Parents for Megan’s Law program. You may contact Parents for Megan’s Law directly at 631-689-2672 for additional subscription forms or download them at their website at www.parentsformeganslaw.com. Residents without Internet access must contact Parents for Megan’s Law at the telephone number listed above for further instructions. A current list of all registered sex offenders known to reside within the boundaries of the Commack School District are always available on our website at: http://www.commack.k12.ny.us/communitynews/strangerdangerlist.asp. Please know that dedication to the safety of our students continues to be our highest priority. Each of our schools has strict safety procedures for students, staff and visitors. In the event that law enforcement informs our district of a resident level 3 sex offender, a detailed description of the offender is automatically given to each staff member, bus driver and organization utilizing school facilities. It is regrettable, but necessary, that we each take the opportunity to review safety rules with the children and remind them to avoid circumstances that may increase their vulnerability. Please help keep this type of information in proper perspective for your children by reassuring them that we do have a safe community, but that they need to be alert and careful in today’s world. I am obligated to remind all that under New York State Law “it is illegal to use sex offender registration information to commit a crime against any of these individuals or to engage in illegal discrimination or harassment against these people.” If you have questions or concerns, you may contact the Parents for Megan’s Law Helpline at 631-689-2672 or visit their website at www.parentsformeganslaw.com. In addition, please feel free to contact your building principal or me if we can be of help in this important matter.
Very truly yours, James A. Feltman, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools
