In 2007 several Commack High School students
began to collect oral histories of local veterans who served
during the Vietnam War. Our veterans are the finest teachers of
our history and we are proud to work in partnership with The
Library of Congress, Veterans History Project, to preserve their
legacies.
In 2008 the high school library staff worked
in conjunction with the Social Studies Dept., the Commack Middle
School and their SS Dept., and using the technological expertise
of our crack IT dept. to host a video-conference, panel
discussion, and tree planting ceremony and dedication with these
local Vietnam Veterans. We invited the veterans, their families,
honored guests, administrators, staff members, and students who
participated in the project as well as Social Study teachers and
their classes to the panel discussion and ceremony.
We honor the service of these veterans, and
of those who servicemen and women who did not come home. We
understand that we must never take for granted those who gave us
their very best. We want to thank all the veterans for
performing your duty during a very difficult time in our
nation’s history. We also take this time to remember the men and
women who continue to serve today.
