READ-A-THON

Each school year, January through March, the Indian Hollow Primary School holds its annual Read-A-Thon. The main goal of the Read-A-Thon is for students to "turn on" to books as they "turn off" the television. As a kick-off to the Read-A-Thon the Commack High School Varsity Cheerleaders visit the school for a reading pep rally.  The first week of the Read-A-Thon is known as "Cold Turkey Week."  Students and their families accept the Cold Turkey challenge to give up television for 3 or 4 days and turn to reading and other fun family activities.  During Cold Turkey Week there is something special going on in school each day to highlight this event.  Day 1 is a visit from an author. Day 2 is DEAR Day (Drop Everything And Read).  Students carry a book with them at all times and begin reading when Mrs. Pace, our principal, announces school-wide that it is time to "Drop Everything And Read."  Day 3 is "Read a Shirt" day.  Students wear and read the text from each other's clothing. Day 4 is "Pocket Day."  Children pocket their favorite poem, joke, or riddle to be shared with their classmates.  The culmination of the week is a "Read-In" sponsored by the PTA at the school in the evening, where students, dressed in pajamas, and their families enjoy  a variety of reading activities. For the Read-A-Thon, each student receives a personalized marker which is moved across a giant mural of located in the lobby. In April, a special awards ceremony is  held to celebrate the students' accomplishments.  This is a wonderful way for students to increase their recreational reading and for parents to share in their child's growth as a reader
