Partners in Reading
Indian Hollow has been involved in the
Partners in Reading Program. The basic premise of the program is to
encourage families to spend at least fifteen minutes each day
reading together with their children. For an entire month, families record the
time spent in shared reading.
As a kick-off for the program, an author or program such as the "Bodacious
Book Show" is brought to the school. In the past, Jose Aruego, a famous author and illustrator of
children's books, visited Indian Hollow School. He shared illustrations from his
many books with the students. Mr. Aruego showed them actual pages from Leo
the Late Bloomer, and taught the children the steps of publishing. He also
described how he mixes colors to get exactly the color he desires for his
illustrations. The students brought pencils and paper with them, and they were
guided by Mr. Aruego to create their own illustrations. Mr. Aruego provided us
with numerous illustrations for us to decorate our classrooms and library as a
wonderful reminder of his visit.
