Summer Honors Reading Program
 

Summer Reading List for English 9 Honors Program

             As a student entering the English 9 Honors program, you are encouraged to read as much as possible in preparation for the new school year.  This reading must include a total of two books (one “Required” and one “Supplementary”), as indicated below.  For each of these books, you will complete an assessment based on the reading when you return to school in the fall. 

            The “Required” texts will be supplied by the English Department on a first come first served basis.  While all the “Supplementary” readings are available in local libraries, some of these texts will also be available on loan from the department in limited quantities.

Required Readings

This book must be read by all 9 Honors students:

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck   

Supplementary Readings

Students are required to read at least one book from the list below:

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Hiroshima by John Hersey 

April Morning by Howard Fast

NOTE:  Students who are new to the honors program this year (that is, who were in 10R last year) are required to read two books from the “Supplementary” list, since they will have previously read the “Required Readings.”

Supplementary Readings

Students are required to read at least one book from the list below. 

            The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway 

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

             A Separate Peace by John Knowles 

                        A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Summer Reading List

English 12 IB and Advanced Placement English  

             As a student entering the English 12 IB or Advanced Placement program, you are encouraged to read as much as possible in preparation for the new school year.  This reading must include three books, as indicated below.  These books are an integral part of the IB/AP curriculum and students will be held accountable for their reading through discussion, writing, tests, etc.  Take careful notes on all summer readings, including character and plot details, literary techniques, and prevalent themes.  For each of these books, you will complete an assessment based on the reading when you return to school in the fall. 

            All the “Required” texts will be supplied by the English Department on a first come first served basis.  While all the “Suggested” readings are available in local libraries, these texts will also be available on loan from the department in limited quantities. 

Required Readings

These three books must be read by all 12 IB/AP English students:

            A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

Summer Reading List for English 11 IB (International Baccalaureate)

             As a student entering the English International Baccalaureate program, you are encouraged to read as much as possible in preparation for the new school year.  This reading must include three books, as indicated below.  These books are an integral part of the IB curriculum and students will be held accountable for their reading through discussion, writing, tests, etc.  Take careful notes on all summer readings, including character and plot details, literary techniques, and prevalent themes.  For each of these books, you will complete an assessment based on the reading when you return to school in the fall.         

            All the “Required” texts will be supplied by the English Department on a first come first served basis.  While all the “Suggested” readings are available in local libraries, these texts will also be available on loan from the department in limited quantities.

These three books must be read by all 11 IB English students:

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

The Stranger by Albert Camus

A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

 

Summer Reading List

C. W. Post English 

             As a student entering the CWP English program, you are encouraged to read as much as possible in preparation for the new school year.  This reading must include two books selected from the list below that you have not previously read.

             For each of these books, you will complete an assessment based on the reading when you return to school in the fall.   

            While all of these readings are available in local libraries, some of these texts may also be available on loan from the department in limited quantities.

         Required Readings

Choose two from the following list:

            Native Son by Richard Wright

            Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

            Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Patton

                        Siddhartha by Herman Hesse
