My Learning Plan

Earth Day at Commack High School

Commack High School Earth Day - Stop the Poaching

Over 150 students and faculty from Commack High School gathered on the front lawn on Earth Day, April 22. The group assembled in the shape of an elephant to assist in the World Wildlife Fund's efforts to combat rampant poaching of rhinos and elephants in Africa.

Signs proclaiming "STOP POACHING NOW" in five different languages surrounded the figure. Dominick Kosciuk, whose German, French & Italian students helped to create the elephant and the banners, has conducted water bottle recycling drives with his classes since 2010. He and his students have raised $750 so far (15,000 bottles), which was donated to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an organization which promotes habitat and species protection. This year, inspired by a picture he saw at "www.stoprhinopoaching.com," Mr. Kosciuk had the idea of forming the outline of an elephant and having the students stand inside to show that they support the WWF and are against poaching. Students from the Art Club heard about this project and helped paint the signs. With the tremendous help of Assistant Principal, Leslie Boritz, World Language Coordinator, Mrs. LauraAnn Weiss, members of the art and language departments, the Commack Fire Department, and Brenda Lentsch for taking the beautiful photos, an important message has been conveyed, that Commack does indeed love the Earth, and that every one of us needs to help preserve it.
