Partnering with Parents in Caring for our Children

As a neighboring district grapples with the heartbreaking and tragic loss of a student, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, district, and community.

During these times, it can be especially challenging for our young people, given the number of issues they grapple with from bullying and cyber-bullying, to what they see in the media, to managing their busy lives, to navigating social media and all that comes with it. As a district, Commack has spent a great deal of time engaging in efforts to help students address these concerns. We have developed opportunities for different types of learning to meet the needs of all children; we have brought in research-based character education/anti-bullying/tolerance and acceptance programs; we have brought in professionals to educate children about the pitfalls associated with the inappropriate use of social media, the misuse of drugs and alcohol, and much more. In addition, we have built in opportunities for students to engage with trained professionals who can help them with issues they are dealing with in today's society. Further, staff continuously meet to discuss ways that we can continue to improve our supports for children.

You should also know that Commack's mental health staff, teachers, administrators, coaches, and everyone involved directly with students diligently monitor student behavior and look for signs that they might need support. However, as we know, children don't always tell us everything. Therefore, as parents, if you know something is going on with your child and need support, you can contact someone at the school. You can start with your child's teacher or guidance counselor, or assistant principal or principal. These individuals are fully prepared and trained to support children in need or know where to go to get the help necessary.

In closing, we have and will continue to engage in conversations about the best protocols and programs for children, and will continue to monitor our children, especially those who we know are grappling with issues. We stand ready to partner with parents as we raise children in this ever-changing society.

Thank you.
