Did You Know? CHS Update...

Our “Did You Know” topic today concerns the fenced in footings in the front of Commack High School that formerly supported our portable classrooms. We’ve heard “It kind of looks like a graveyard,” and “Why are those pillars still there?” The answer is a little complex, although the bottom line is this – we are awaiting final approval from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to ensure that the removal project will be partially funded as a Capital Project.

The total budget for the project is $603,500, and the approximate building aid we will receive is $386,240 – well worth the often long and involved process of submitting paperwork and awaiting approval from the State. This particular Capital Project also includes bleacher replacement in the south gymnasium and on the athletic field at the high school (visitor’s side).

Similar to the Capital Project that involved extensive sidewalk and masonry work at Indian Hollow last summer, heavy equipment trucks will do the bulk of the work. We prefer to do construction work when school is not in session for the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. We are hopeful that by the start of school in September, the “graveyard” will be history, and the beautification project can begin.

Did you know that the six modular classrooms were sold to another school district, and the cost of moving them was covered by that district?

Committed to fulfill the goals set by the Commack Board of Education, our District leaders continue to maintain and improve the facilities of the District through fiscally responsible methods and by using every possible avenue to increase funding and reduce costs.

We hope you enjoy our “Did You Know” series, and welcome your suggestions for future articles!
