State Assessment Information Grades 3-8
Dear Parents and/or Guardians:

This letter will serve as a reminder that all third through eighth grade students will be taking the New York State ELA and New York State Math Assessments according to the following schedule:
  • Grades 3 through 8 ELA will be administered on April 11 & 12
  • Grades 3 through 8 Math will be administered on May 1 & 2
As you know, in Commack, we respect the right of parents to choose whether they will allow their child to take the above-mentioned state tests. The decision to not allow participation in these tests is commonly known as “opting-out” of the test. To opt-out of state assessments, parents/guardians must simply notify the school in writing of their decision.

For the convenience of our families, we have provided the following three options for notifying the school of their decision to opt out for any of these assessments:
  • A letter submitted to the school stating the child’s name and test for opt-out
  • A completed form (attached and available for printing) for each child can be submitted to the school
  • A form for each child completed and submitted electronically on the parent portal (Log into the parent portal and click on message and inbox)

  • Any of the above options are acceptable, although we suggest that the attached form’s simplicity and availability make it the most convenient. Please note that a separate form or letter is required for each child.

Please notify us of your decision to opt-out as soon as possible. The opt-out form will be available on the Parent Portal until April 6th for ELA and April 26th for Math.

Should you need assistance with your Parent Portal account information, please contact [email protected].

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Donald A. James
    Superintendent, Commack School District
