The
Commack PTA Council Nutrition Committee is comprised of PTA
Nutrition representatives from each school and the PTA
Council Chair. The Committee attends monthly district
meetings; in attendance is also a school nurse
representative, a teacher representative, Jeremy Thode
(Wellness Committee representative), Mrs. Laura Newman
(Assistant Superintendent for Business) and representatives
from the food service company. The Committee is also
continuing its relationship with Leah Holbrook and The Heart
Links Project, a community nutrition program that works with
school districts to improve the food environment through
awareness, education and policy/environmental change. We
discuss and review monthly menus and any current, pertinent
issues. Each year the Committee decides on year long goals
to accomplish in order to improve the nutritional standards
of our district’s school lunch program. This year’s goals
are; to improve the quality of the ala carte snack choices
being offered in our cafeterias and vending machines, and
the elimination of partially hydrogenated fats in lunch
program foods, both prepared and sold.
March is National Nutrition Month and this year, the
district has designated the week of March 24th - 28th as
Nutrition Week. PTA Nutrition representatives from each
building are encouraged to plan fun and educational events
to celebrate Nutrition Week. Please look for information to
follow as to possible events planned for your child’s
school. Together with the staff reps, Ms. Holbrook, Mr.
Thode, Mrs. Newman, and the food service company reps, the
Commack PTA Council Nutrition Committee looks forward to
another positive and productive school year.
Thank you,
