Studies
In first grade, students will focus on four major strands of the NYS curriculum in an age-appropriate meaningful way: economics, geography, identity, and government. Lessons will include Scholastic News articles and a Big Book series to elicit class discussions related to the following topics:
· Government:
-roles of citizens in the school, community, and world
-the reasons for laws, rights, and responsibilities
-citizenship involves having respect for American symbols
-problem solving and conflict resolution strategies for getting along with others
· Identity:
-what makes a family
-types
of families, various family members, family trees
-families change over time
-families celebrate for different reasons (customs, beliefs)
-there are cultural differences among members of the community

Economics:
-there is a difference between needs and wants
-people make money by having jobs
-there are jobs that provide services
-making
decisions about how to save or spend money
· Geography:
-basic map skills
-communication can keep people connected
-forms of transportation
