Literacy Development
In Reading, most second
grade children:
develop the skill of understanding main ideas, supporting details, cause and effect, and sequence of events,
read to follow written directions,
further develop and extend their ability to make predictions, inferences, and draw relevant conclusions,
extend their knowledge of literary genre to include biographies,
extend vocabulary through reading experiences and the study of word structure,
develop the ability to use different strategies to identify unknown words, i.e. structural analysis, the sense of sentence, the letter-sound association,
identify base words in words which contain affixes, prefixes, and suffixes,
identify compound words, synonyms, and antonyms,
extend sight vocabulary.
In Writing, most second
grade children: 
write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and descriptive detail,
add written descriptive details to simple sentences,
write a paragraph revealing who, what, when, where, and how,
learn to write a cause/effect paragraph,
complete research projects in the content areas.
