Second Grade

Second Grade at Rolling Hills is filled with excitement and adventure. Have you ever wondered what a typical school day was like for a child living in the 19th century?  If you are intrigued by this question, just ask a second grader from Rolling Hills!  After learning about the pioneer days, the children dress in the attire popular in 1880 and spend a whole day at the One Room Schoolhouse in Stony Brook.  They use slate boards to solve arithmetic problems, write with dip-pens in their copybooks, and even saw wood for the school's pot-bellied stove!

Did you know that the blue whale is the largest animal to ever live on Earth?  As a culminating activity to our literature-based mammal unit, the second graders take a trip to the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum.  They participate in an educational scavenger hunt while discovering the significance and history of whaling on Long Island.

Have you ever made someone living in an adult home smile on Valentine's Day?  We try to, in February, when we visit a local adult home in Commack!  The children decorate gifts and practice songs and poems in preparation for this very special occasion.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like in space?  As part of the Solar System and Space unit, second graders visit the Cradle of Aviation to learn about the universe and space travel.  There are so many hands- on activities and exhibits to explore!  We also are fortunate to see an IMAX movie that makes you feel like you are blasting off into space!
