In second grade, most children learn that:
a community is located in an urban, suburban or rural area, and is influenced by geographic features and seasonal changes,
people in urban, suburban or rural areas are producers and consumers of goods and services,
communities collect taxes to provide services that help meet the needs and wants of the people,
the family is the basic unit of society, and all of its members are interdependent,
each person in the community has an ethnic background which may be passed on to others, and changes the community,
families and communities develop rules to govern and protect themselves,
rules protect the community and reflect the rights and responsibilities of each person in the group,
there are certain symbols and celebrations that are important to the community.
