| Too much Information????? |
|
So you’ve discovered blogs - your own free personal web space – pretty great, right? But what are you posting there? What if Grandpa visited your page, or for that matter, anyone whose opinion you really cared about? Would you be embarrassed about what’s posted there? And, most importantly, can you be located by the information you posted on your blog? No? Good, then you don’t have to read any further. Maybe? Then read a bit more. It’s great that you can express yourself, and blogs give you a way to do this on a worldwide level. If you think that just your friends are looking at your Myspace page, think again. Anyone with access to the web can find you, look at what you’ve posted, and even communicate directly with you. That’s a scary thought. So let’s talk safety – did you post your first and last name – where you live – the school you go to – where you hang out? If you did, take it down now! Be smart! There are lots of weirdoes in the world, and you don’t want them to know who you are, or where you live, work, etc. Your friends already know all about you, so why post it on a blog for everyone else to see? Let’s talk identity theft – did you put your birthday up there? It’s pretty easy to take on someone else’s identity if they have your name, address, date of birth, or any two of those items. Ever do a Google search for your name? Try it, and see what comes up. Ever do a search of your telephone number? Your street address and directions to your house come up. Protect yourself and your family and be smart: take down anything from your blog that might lead to you (and there are people out there just looking for information like that). Let’s talk pictures – and the captions you add to them. Do you think your boyfriend’s mom would like to know you’re “a hotty,” or “too sexy?” Enough said, you get the idea. Just one final thought, and this is advice from a real mom, who also happens to be pretty savvy about the web. It’s normal to want to belong to a group and to “fit in.” But you don’t have to do everything everyone else does to be popular. You might be surprised to find that you earn your friends’ respect for doing the right thing, not the “in” thing. Listen to your heart.
