Language Arts
The heart of our academic program at Wood Park is our Balanced Literacy Program. This program is based on the New York State English Language Arts Standards. Our language instruction is introduced in authentic situations that have meaning for the learner. Reading, writing, listening and speaking are language processes that compliment and support one another. We believe in a balanced and integrated approach to language arts instruction. Therefore, the purpose of our language instruction here at Wood Park is to help students use language skillfully. Our children are exposed to language in a meaningful context, increasing their motivation to read and write.
Mathematics Mathematics instruction is a combination of hands-on learning experiences as well as pencil and paper tasks. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are emphasized as vital parts of mathematics instruction at Wood Park. Computer software is used to further support students' acquisition of math skills and provide enrichment.
Science
Our science program involves children in the scientific process of inquiry. Children visit the science lab on a weekly basis to perform experiments involving such topics as: magnets, shadows, water-play, plants, liquids and gases, animals, the five senses and more. Our science activities have been enriched through the use of the Windows on Primary Science laser disc software. Technology plays an integral role in our instructional program.
Technology
Our Technology program is state of the art with on-line teacher and student computers in each classroom. A cable-connected 27” TV monitor in the classroom interfaces with the teacher computer to provide an entirely new dimension to our instructional program. Instructional videos can be programmed and accessed by each classroom teacher through a central server-allowing video on demand. In addition, students visit the Computer Lab weekly where they learn basic keyboarding, word processing and internet skills. Students also utilize software that compliments their academic program.
Music
Vocal music instruction includes singing, rhythm, listening, pitch discrimination and tone color. In addition, we showcase our children's musical talents in our annual Winter and Spring Festivals.
Art
As part of the art program, the children are taught basic concepts such as color, form and texture. In addition, the children are exposed to a variety of art media as they develop eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. The children's work is displayed throughout the building to promote personal pride in their accomplishments.
Physical Education
Our physical education program develops the children's motor skills, coordination, and body tone and promotes a healthy life style. There were several special programs this past year that highlighted our children's accomplishments such as Western Day, the Bicycle Rodeo and Family Fun Day.
Library
Our library is the center of our entire language arts program at Wood Park. It is a place where children come to have award-winning literature read to them. They also share stories together and select books appropriate to their interest and skill level. They learn basic library skills and in second grade they begin doing research on special topics.
