Second grade at Wood Park is filled with adventure. The
students are filled with excitement about learning and want to share their
enthusiasm with each other. Second graders are also developing academically.
Most can now read, and many are becoming skillful writers. Everyone has fun
expanding their horizons and we capitalize on their eagerness to learn.
Our adventures are filled with exploring the world through
literature. Using fiction & nonfiction, and poetry & plays second
graders enter the worlds of the solar system, pioneers, and whales. Reading in
second grade at Wood Park is growing into knowing.
In second grade writing is everywhere and the
students love it. Through Writer’s Workshop and mini-lessons students are
practicing sentence structure, punctuation, quotation marks, dialogue and
paragraph writing, spelling, descriptive and expressive writing and writing
memoirs. These developing skills are used while writing stories, poetry,
journals, book reports and friendly letters to pen pals.
Our curriculum links reading, writing, math, science,
social studies and character education with a unified focus. We present
units, themes, activities and projects that focus on learning, utilize their
skills and enable students to acquire knowledge.
Second graders explore their curiosities of the world
through the study and use of maps, globes, communities, countries and
continents.
In math second graders work on understanding basic concepts and are
continually extending their applications. We can always hear comments such as,
“I can tell time.” “I can add and subtract.” And “Let’s divide the
cake into equal parts.” At Wood
Park we go beyond paper and pencil tasks. Second graders become mathematically
literate through the use of calculators and computers as well as candy and
cakes. Learning centers, game stations, practice lessons and literature
extensions all encourage a thorough understanding of the math curriculum.
At Wood Park we strive to create a rich environment where
learning happens 24/7. Second
grade is an exciting adventure. Enjoy the ride!
