How to Submit College Applications & Required Material

     IMPORTANT:  All students must complete the FERPA Privacy Notice before the Counseling Center can process applications.

      1.       Go to and create a Common Application Account.

            2.       Go to Education under Common App, add Commack High School under Current or Most Recent School.

            3.       Go to College Search and add at least one college to your list.

            4.       Go to My Colleges and select the college you added.  Complete FERPA Release Authorization under Recommenders and FERPA.

            5.       Log on to Naviance Student (contact Counseling Center for account or login help).

            6.       Go to Colleges tab and enter email address used for Common App on Colleges I’m Applying To page.


Common Application Colleges

            1.       Log on to Common App (

            2.       Under College Search, find and add colleges to your My Colleges list.  If you cannot find a school, see below for Non-Common Application instructions 

            3.       Complete all required items (designated by a red asterisk) under Common App and My Colleges tabs.

            4.       Pay required application fee and submit application(s)

            5.       Print proof of application (confirmation e-mail or screen shot of Dashboard)

Non-Common Application Colleges

            1.       Go to Admissions page of college web site to find online application

            2.       Complete application as instructed, pay required application fee and submit application

            3.       Print proof of successful submission (confirmation e-mail or screen shot)


            1.       Submit Application Processing Request form (available in the Counseling Center) and proof of application to the Counseling Center.

  •           By October 1 for applications with November 1 deadlines
  •          By October 15 for application with November 15 deadlines
  •          By November 1 for applications with December 1 deadlines
  •          By November 15 for applications with January 1 deadlines
  •          15 School days before deadline for deadlines after January 1 


            2.       The Counseling Center will electronically submit the following items through Naviance or mail them to the few colleges that still require hard copies.

  •       Official Transcript, Counselor Recommendation, Commack High School Teacher Recommendations, Secondary School Report, Commack High School Profile

            3.       SAT’s and ACT’s

Students must request official score reports through the appropriate testing agency

            4.       Additional material

  •       Students are responsible for sending all other required or optional items

Counselor Recommendation

You must submit your Student Autobiography, Parent Feedback, and Activity Resume before your counselor can write your recommendation.

Teacher Recommendations:

            1.       Speak to your teacher.  If they agree to write a letter, give them a Request for Teacher Recommendation form (available in the Counseling Center) along with your responses to three of the questions listed on the form.

            2.       To check if recommendations have been submitted, go to Naviance Student, Apply to College and click on Teacher Recommendations to see if they have been submitted.
