CHS research students at ISEFThree of our Commack students qualified for entry onto the world stage at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) - Pragati Muthukumar, Sean Pak, and Ethan Sontarp. The week-long competition is in Phoenix this year, and the students are accompanied by their teachers/mentors, Dr. Lorraine Solomon and Jeanette Collette.
Pragati's project: Identifying Differential Expression and Conserved Alternative Splicing (AS) Events in Zea mays
Sean's project: Receiver Noise Performance Optimization and Artificial Neural Network Based Target Localization Method for Multi-Static Passive Radar Systems
Ethan's project: U-Pb Geochronology of Fossilized Horse Teeth from the Barstow Formation, California
A daily blog of the events is below.  Good luck to our Commack High School science researchers! #CommackProud

Day 0 - Traveling to Phoenix

Day 1 - May 12

Sean, Pragati, and Ethan spent the morning setting up their project boards. We ate a late lunch at the Hard Rock cafe and celebrated Ethan's birthday and Mother's Day. At night the students went to a pin exchange with high school students from all over the world.

Day 2 - May 13

The tests must go on!  Today our students missed an excursion to study for their IB tests. After an intense morning of studying and taking IB Math exams, students relaxed and enjoyed watching batting practice with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Later that evening, they attended the ISEF opening ceremonies then it was back to practicing before getting some rest.

Day 3 - Exams and Practice!

While today topped 100 degrees, we barely noticed as students went from IB exams to practicing all day.
At night, Pragati took some time off to enjoy the Arizona Diamondbacks vs Pittsburgh Pirates game sponsored by Intel ISEF, while Sean and Ethan continued studying for their IB exams and practicing for tomorrow: Judging Day!

Day 4 - Judging Day

Todays the Day!!!! It all comes down to this.....
Sean and Pragati started the Day taking IB Math paper 3, while Ethan got to relax a little....Notice them smiling through the pain.
Then all went into the Exibition Hall for 5.5 hours of judging. You all look great! Good Luck to All!
In the evening, after a grueling day of judging, students were rewarded with a student mixer, where they showed off their dance moves.

Day 5 - Public Day

After explaining their projects and being asked questions by judges yesterday, today's the day for the public to come to see the exhibitions. In the evening at the Special Awards Ceremony, Ethan took third place as the winner of the GDA and AGI Special Award for Outstanding Performance in Earth Science!

Day 6 - Grand Awards Day

Pragati and Sean prepare for their last IB exam in Arizona, while Ethan gets to relax and enjoy breakfast...his exam is after the ceremony! Pragati took fourth place @ISEF2019 in Plant Sciences!
