Expanded Breakfast & Lunch Grab and Go for Commack Students

The Commack School District's Grab and Go lunch and daily snack program is expanding! We received approval to change our service to now serve breakfast and lunch to our students. In addition, we applied and received approval from New York State to also provide breakfast and lunch for Saturdays and Sundays.  In other words, we will be able to provide two meals every day, seven days a week.

Our Grab and Go program will continue Monday through Friday at Commack High School from 10 a.m. to noon. Today (March 20) families will receive lunch for three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) AND breakfast for Saturday, Sunday AND Monday.

Beginning Monday, March 23, pickups will include a lunch and a breakfast for each day.  Thank you to NYS for the increase in services to our families and to Whitsons Culinary Group for ramping up the meal service program to do so. Please encourage Commack families to participate in this food service program.

We thank you for your cooperation in this difficult time and please stay healthy.

Details: The Commack School District is providing free “grab-and-go” bagged lunch and breakfast for children (18 years old or under) who are from families with students in our District. This food service will be available weekdays, Mondays through Fridays, while our schools are closed for the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis. Additional meals for the weekend will be included in Friday's bags. The informational section below should help answer common questions about this program.

Question:

Are these “grab-and-go” free bagged meals only available to students already eligible for free or reduced priced meals?

Answer:

NO. Free “grab-and-go” bagged lunches are available to any child who attends our schools. In addition, any household member who is 18 years old or under is also eligible for a free bagged lunch.

Question:

What is considered a free bagged meal?

Answer:

A bagged lunch and breakfast is a simplified cold version of our typical full meal served in our schools and contains all the meal components required by the State Education Department.

Question:

Where do I go for my free bagged meal?

Answer:

Bagged lunch and breakfast for each household member under the age of 18 will be delivered curbside to residents who show up between the hours of 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at Commack High School. Delivery by bus is also available.

Question:

Do I need to go to Commack High School daily for my free bagged meals?

Answer:

NO. Each day when a resident arrives at the high school for the free grab-and-go bagged meals, every household member 18 years old or under will receive a bagged lunch for that day. If you believe that you cannot make it to the district the following day you may take an extra set of meals to last two days. Bus delivery also began on April 6. See article for bus routes.

Question:

Will I need to pay the District back for any meals I received during this emergency?

Answer:

NO. All residents with school-aged students, regardless of their status as recipients of free or reduced priced meals, are eligible for free “grab-and-go” bagged meals during this emergency period.

Question:

I prefer not to enter the school building to get my meals, what do I do?

Answer:

At the high school, residents will remain in their vehicles. This is a “curbside” program which means a District employee will bring out to your car the number of free bagged lunches which your household is eligible for (anyone aged 18 years or under).

Question:

Must my school-aged student(s) be present with me in the car?

Answer:

NO. When the District employee approaches your vehicle, simply indicate how many students aged 18 or under are in your household.

We hope that this free meal program for students 18 years of age or under provides some level of relief for our families during this emergency school closure. Please direct any questions regarding this program in writing to Mr. Brian Grodotzke the District’s Treasurer, at [email protected]
