Commack School District Appoints Interim Superintendent
Steven Hartman, President of the Commack Union Free School District Board of Education, has announced the appointment of Mr. David Flatley as the Interim Superintendent of Schools effective December 1, 2021. The District’s current Superintendent, Dr. Donald James, recently tendered his resignation effective November 30, 2021.
 
Mr. Flatley’s distinguished career in education includes nine years as Superintendent of Schools and seven years as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Personnel of the Carle Place Union Free School District. Most recently, Mr. Flatley served as the Interim Deputy Superintendent in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District for the 2020-2021 school year. 

“We are thrilled to have Mr. Flatley lead our District through the balance of this school year as our Interim Superintendent,” said Mr. Hartman. “We are certain that with Mr. Flatley’s extensive experience as an educator and his proven track record of administrative excellence and leadership, he will continue to advance the exceptional educational experience offered in Commack Schools.”

"I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the Commack School District and work with such an outstanding and accomplished faculty and dedicated staff who make this District so special,” said Mr. Flatley. “I recognize that the District is in excellent condition from both an instructional and fiscal standpoint, and I hope to be a good partner with the community and Board to make this transition as well as the transition to the District’s next permanent superintendent in July smooth and successful.

Mr. Flatley has been a valued educator on Long Island since 1979, working as a school administrator for 26 years across multiple districts. Prior to his administrator roles as a principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent, Mr. Flatley was a middle school and high school classroom teacher in math and science for 15 years. 

Mr. Flatley earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Hofstra University and his master of science in Biology from St. John’s University. He received his Advanced Certificate in Educational Administration and Supervision from Brooklyn College. He has held executive roles at the New York State Council of School Superintendents, Nassau Association of District Curriculum Officials, Long Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents.
