A Welcome Note From The Director:

Welcome to the Commack School District’s Department of World Languages and ENL.  Our department is dedicated to providing an enriching and inclusive educational experience for students, equipping them with the linguistic and cultural competencies necessary to thrive in an interconnected world. Whether students are embarking on the exciting journey of learning a new language or honing their proficiency in English, our committed team of educators is here to support and guide them every step of the way.

At Commack, we recognize the unique strengths and contributions that each student brings to our learning community. Through a combination of innovative teaching methodologies, cultural exploration, and personalized attention, we aim to inspire a love for language and an appreciation for diverse perspectives.

Overview & Goals Of The Curriculum:

Commack Middle School World Languages

The 6th grade every other day language program emphasizes foundational concepts in French, Spanish or Italian while aligning closely with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). Each unit is guided by a Statement of Inquiry that fosters connections between learning and real-world applications. The program places a dedicated focus on achieving communicative goals and promotes an enhanced understanding of cultures worldwide.

For 7th and 8th graders, daily language instruction in French, Spanish or Italian builds upon the foundation laid in 6th grade, continuing topics and themes while further developing skills introduced earlier and increasing their novice language proficiency. Additionally, it introduces new Checkpoint A topics, preparing students for the Checkpoint A Exam at the culmination of 8th grade. This program provides a seamless progression, ensuring students deepen their understanding and readiness for further academic challenges.

Commack High School World Languages

Commack High School's World Language Department is dedicated to fostering language proficiency and cultural understanding among its students, with the ultimate aim of nurturing globally-minded citizens. Offering a diverse array of languages including French, Spanish, Italian, and American Sign Language (ASL), the department ensures students have a rich selection to choose from, catering to various interests and backgrounds. Through immersive language instruction and cultural exploration, students not only develop linguistic skills but also gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultures and perspectives that shape our interconnected world. Moreover, the department provides students with the opportunity to earn the NYS Seal of Biliteracy, recognizing their proficiency in the study of world languages and further incentivizing linguistic excellence. By equipping students with the tools to communicate across borders and fostering cultural empathy, Commack High School's World Language Department empowers students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and multicultural society.
