Buon Appetito! CHS Italian Students Learn Art of Making Pesto

CHS students studying Italian Language and Culture 1 and 2 enjoyed a literal treat on Monday.
The students gathered in the art gallery to be taught the art of making pesto from Stony Brook Italian professor Giuseppe Gazzola.
The recipe is from Gazzola’s native Genoa in the region of Liguria in Italy — the “birthplace” of pesto.
Students in the Italian Language and Culture 1 and 2 courses study regions of Italy in class. They then connect geography to food by learning about native cuisine from each region of the country.
The students sampled the pesto as well as fresh bread on Monday morning.
Gazzola explained to the students in Italian the technique for making the sauce and also quizzed them in the language about the geography of Genoa.
It marks the third consecutive year students in the class have enjoyed the sampling.
Gazzola is the husband of one of the CHS course’s teachers, Tracey Gazzola.
