CHS Sophomores Experience Immersive Holocaust Education Through Virtual Reality

Tenth-grade students at CHS are participating in a deeply moving educational initiative, embarking on a thought-provoking virtual tour of the Auschwitz concentration camp without ever leaving their classrooms.
Through a special program brought to the school by the organization Spirit of Triumph, students in AP World and Global 10 social studies classes are utilizing virtual reality headsets for an immersive journey into the past. This cutting-edge technology transports students directly to the haunting landscapes of the camp, offering a firsthand perspective that goes far beyond a traditional textbook.
The VR experience allows the sophomores to be visually present at the historic site. They can look around in a full 360 degrees and even take in bird’s-eye views of the grounds captured by hovering drones. During the tour, students follow a virtual guide from the train tracks and lineup areas to the barracks, showers, and crematoria.
To ensure a comprehensive and respectful learning experience, the program seamlessly blends historical accuracy with interactive elements, including survivor testimonies and artifacts. The visual journey is accompanied by poignant narration from Yisrael Goldwasser, an internationally acclaimed speaker on the Holocaust, whose explanations provide deep context to the powerful tour.
Guided by their educators, students are using this immersive tool to foster deep empathy and a better understanding of one of history’s darkest chapters. The ultimate goal of the Spirit of Triumph program is to empower young learners to confront the stark realities of the Holocaust and understand the devastating consequences of prejudice and indifference. By actively engaging with history in such a visceral way, the experience reinforces the vital and enduring message that “Never Again is Now.”
