First graders learned about moon phases and the constellations during a visit from the Long Island Science Center on Friday.

Students were greeted in the gymnasium by the StarLab inflatable planetarium for 30-minute sessions.

They saw satellite images in the mobile planetarium of the night sky and galaxy.

North Ridge hosted their Art and Science Expo on Wednesday evening. 

Students had the opportunity to walk the halls and show off some of their best artwork and science projects to their family and friends. Each student had multiple pieces of artwork on display throughout the building, and class science projects were on display in the gymnasium. 

“We are so proud to showcase the amazing work of our students,” North Ridge Principal Katherine Rihm said.

Commack Schools greeted its newest employees during May’s “Welcome Wednesday” onboarding session at the Hubbs Administration Building on Wednesday. 

 

Superintendent Dr. Jordan Cox, curriculum associates Dr. Michael Inforna and Dr. Jennifer Santorello and assistant superintendents Timothy Russo and Scott Oshrin gave an overview of the district to the group and explained various resources that they will need.

The group also was given the opportunity to get to know one another at the meeting to get acclimated. Executive Director of Instructional Technology Alise Pulliam and the MIS team then assisted the group in accessing their district email and employee accounts for the first time.

 

 “I hope you enjoy your journey here and want to welcome you to our family,” Cox told the newest staff members.

 

The monthly “Welcome Wednesday” meetings are designed to make onboarding with the district a seamless process.

CMS honored its "Science Superstars" in a ceremony after school on Wednesday.

Teachers each selected a member of his or her class who exemplified intellectual curiosity and an embrace of science.

Indian Hollow students are making a difference in the community … while only in first grade!

On Wednesday afternoon, for their spring community service project, the students designed door banners for the residents at St. Catherine’s Nursing Home in Smithtown.

The first graders at Indian Hollow have been working on community service projects each season. Their initiative is called, "First Graders Care."

During the fall, they made large murals for the Northport VA Hospital to thank the veterans for their service around Veteran’s Day.

During the winter, they sponsored a Pajama Drive and donated new pajamas to the children in the pediatric department at Stony Brook Hospital.

Wood Park students were recognized Wednesday morning by Long Island Cares for collecting $500 in coins for the charity.

Wood Park raised the most of any school during the "Wings of Change" campaign.

Founded in 1980, Long Island Cares helps the food insecure, such as by operating The Harry Chapin Food Bank.
